Snoring, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Dental therapy

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea? (OSA)

OSA is an anatomical constriction of the airways that results in sleep disturbance through multiple ‘wakeful’ episodes during the night. The airway is cut off due to the lower jaw relaxing backwards allowing the tongue and soft tissues to close over the windpipe.

The body recognises this lack of oxygen and sends a jolt of adrenaline and other hormones through the body to wake you up! This places a massive strain on the heart and other body systems and can lead to several negative long term health effects.

Keep Your Teeth for Life

The signs and symptoms are commonly, but not exclusively:

  • Snoring
  • Spouse recognises not breathing!
  • Choking
  • Frequent bathroom breaks at night
  • Sleepiness during the day
  • Lack of energy and falling asleep at work
  • Poor concentration and memory
  • Grinding and wear of teeth, increased decay rate and cracked teeth

What we do to help

As dentists we often diagnose many medical conditions before the GP does because part of our checkup includes managing the airway.

If we suspect OSA, or even are looking for a solution to snoring, we can coordinate a treatment plan for you that might entail:

  • Referal to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist
  • Sleep studies
  • Provision of a Mandibular Advancement Splint

We choose to use SomnoMed splints due to their excellent reputation, function and because they are made in Australia.
