Quality Crowns & Bridges On Sydney's North Shore
A dental crown is a complete covering made over a damaged tooth to protect it, improve the appearance and restore the original function. When cracked or damaged by decay, teeth can be replaced or covered with this procedure, giving your smile a natural and fully functional look.
A crown is typically made from porcelain fused to gold, but can also be entirely porcelain, entirely gold, or an alternative metal like zirconia depending on the case. A bridge is made of the same material but replaces a missing tooth by having a “bridging” tooth attached to two crowns either side of a gap. I.e. It is 3 or more crowns fused together to replace missing teeth. A dental bridge is generally necessary when more than one tooth needs to be replaced. Acting much like a bridge connecting two bodies of land, a dental bridge connects the open space between teeth. A crown is then placed on the tooth at each end of the gap.

These two treatments, unlike dentures, are fixed to your underlying teeth and cannot be removed.
When they're Necessary:
Crowns are recommended for several reasons. The most common are:
- When a tooth is worn or cracked to the point that it cannot support a normal filling, one of these procedures can be a good solution.
- Teeth damaged by accident or regular grinding can be given new strength and a better look with a dental crown or bridge.
- Teeth which have undergone root canal therapy and are weak and brittle can be protected and restored using a dental crown.
- Missing teeth are not just a cosmetic problem. A dental crown or bridge can prevent changes to jaw muscles, bones and joints in the mouth and preserve the functionality of all the teeth.
Crowning a tooth when advised by your dentist can help prevent unfortunate events that might require further treatment such as extractions or root canal therapy. Bridges are placed for the reasons above but also to replace a missing tooth or teeth.
About The Procedure
How long will it take?
There are usually two visits for a crown to be made. During the first appointment, the tooth is numbed and any old fillings, decay and cracked pieces are removed. A foundation is placed and the tooth stump is shaped. The porcelain colour is then chosen, moulds are taken and a temporary crown is fitted to protect the tooth. This appointment is normally about 90 minutes.
During the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and a permanent one is adjusted and cemented onto the tooth stump. This takes about 45 minutes.
Will it hurt?
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic so it is not expected to be painful during its preparation. There may be some tenderness and sensitivity of the tooth and gums following, however usual over-the-counter pain relief is more than enough to control such inconveniences.
How much will it cost?
Each case is different, please contact us for pricing information. Bridges are costed based upon the number of teeth to be replaced as well as the choice of material.
We guarantee that all of our crowns are made in Sydney with the highest quality materials, and that all care is taken in their preparation and fitting.
Quality Materials for A Better Result
In these difficult economic times, many people are eager to save on costs. While this is understandable, don’t underestimate the importance of using high quality materials. All of our crowns are made here in Sydney from patented German and Swiss materials, and have proven durability. Our most popular types are genuine German VMK™ crowns, which we have been doing at this practice since 1962. Amazingly some of these original crowns – now 50 years old – are still working! Unlike cheaper products made in China, they do not contain Nickel, Chromium or Beryllium which are known allergens or cancer causing agents.
The cost will depend on which of the four types of dental crowns is selected. While it may be tempting to choose a dentist based on the cost, be sure you have all the information necessary before making this important decision. Our team is happy to answer questions regarding the procedure and the cost of dental crowns if you’re unsure.
What About Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are a very thin shell bonded to the front, side and edge of your teeth. They can help improve the shape or colour of teeth when only minor modification is necessary.
Veneers are often chosen over crowns or bridges for their cosmetic superiority. They reflect light the same way real enamel does, making them appear very natural. They also have a smooth surface that will not permanently stain. With proper veneer care, they can last for more than ten years.
