Are you hiding your smile due to the colour of your teeth? Teeth can become stained or discoloured from a number of day to day habits, such as smoking, drinking dark liquids such as red wine, coffee, tea and cola. Tooth yellowing and greying can also occur from the natural aging process. If this applies to you, the dentists at Pymble Dental Practice can help.
Teeth whitening is a common procedure where the teeth are whitened chemically using a whitening agent, such as carbamide or hydrogen peroxide.
Patient treated at Pymble Dental with Zoom whitening in a single session
There are many different whitening treatments available in the marketplace, many of which are in the 'do-it-yourself' category, including toothpastes and take-home gels. Australian law states that retail products for home teeth whitening treatments can only have a maximum of 1 percent concentration of whitening agents, making them far less effective than the professional-grade products. Dentists are permitted to use 16 percent concentration, which allows Pymble Dental to provide you with a more effective whitening solution.
We offer two options for patients interested in whitening their smile. Your teeth whitening procedure can be done in a single visit to the clinic using the assistance of a laser, or we can make you some trays to take home to whiten your teeth over a period of 2 weeks.
In-Chair Teeth Whitening
This procedure is called chair-side whitening and usually only requires one visit to our practice. The dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect the lips and gums. A very concentrated whitening agent is then applied to the teeth and repeated several times over an hour with a special light that activates the gel. While this treatment is faster, the solution used on the teeth is very strong, occasionally resulting in some sensitivity and a less predictable outcome. They are best used where immediate results are required, such as for a job interview or wedding.
The safety of your teeth is important and all our products are made in the USA to FDA approval. They also pass the Australian Therapeutic Goods Act.
Zoom whiteners actually whiten the tooth enamel and come in a gel formula which is placed in a custom tray similar to a mouthguard. Typically, the procedure is done at home at a convenient time, such as while watching TV, for an hour each day over the course of a week.
This is the most common method, and the one preferred by Pymble Dental. We have been using Zoom!® Nite White for the past 15 years as we find it produces the most consistent, long-lasting results with minimum sensitivity.
Further Teeth Whitening Information
How does it work?
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure. It works because the free radicals in the whitening agent bond to the pigments of the enamel and break them into their colourless parts. It does not damage, nor remove any tooth structure.
Whitening will improve the shade and lustre of the natural teeth, however it will not whiten fillings or crowns. Whitening can be done as part of a cosmetic rehabilitation or just by itself.
How long will it take?
The In-Office whitening (Zoom Laser) appointment takes a single 75 minute visit. The take home trays and bleach will require daily use for 30 minutes-1 hour for 2 weeks.
Will it hurt?
The whitening procedure can cause temporary sensitivity. This might be during the procedure, and can also last for a couple of hours afterwards. We recommend some relief in the form of a fluoride or calcium phosphate gel such as tooth mousse to assist in making you more comfortable.
